Directors statement

Do You know this profound sadness, this feeling of being trapped inside yourself? The chill of loneliness that slowly and steadily leads to numbness, yet is challenged by a fierce fighting spirit?

It was the urge to find words for this strange amalgam of emotions. But to get to the root of things and precisely convey this, it wouldn’t suffice simply to explain the rationale. Film to me is always a way to find words without words. That’s why it was of the utmost importance to find a visual language creating a perception rather than the need for an explanation.

Set in an austere surrounding, with a view from a window that just seems like another kind of wall, everything is reduced to its core. There is no dialogue in „Irina“, not even the classic visual storytelling that usually furthers protagonist-recipient- bonding. But why should Irina be portrayed so isolated, yet connect with the audience? To understand how she feels it’s ultimately important that you let yourself be affected by the picture in its entirety.
The richness of the narration lies in all the little details that unfold into a windswept journey, both merciless and affectionate simultaneously.
